Hood Leather Goods’ “Hood Cares Program” has been a part of our business for many years. Through the “Hood Cares Program”, we have had the ability to help people in our own community. All of our employees participate with food drives, clothing drives, donations, etc. Having been in the same location for 30 years, we have had the ability to make a difference with people less fortunate than ourselves.
We also strongly believe in being environmentally conscious as well. Our daily goal in running our business is to avoid creating as much waste as possible. We have also participated in energy efficient ways to run our business. Recycling is a very important aspect of controlling what ends up in our area landfills.
In 2013, we met with Focus On Energy to determine what we could do to make our manufacturing area more energy efficient. Through their guidance, we were able to replace all of our outdated fluorescent light fixtures with new LED lower cost fixtures.
We have been involved with Repairers of the Breach for several years. This organization, which is located in the same area as our business, has been a staple for helping the homeless. It isn’t just a homeless shelter. The goal of the organization is to aid the homeless in becoming self-sufficient. They are the only daytime shelter and resource center for the homeless.
Although this is only an annual event, it takes many volunteers to make this a success. It’s the Project Homeless Connect event. It is a one-day, one-stop event where homeless people can come to access multiple services and resources under one roof.
We have also been deeply involved with the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. They have a large variety of programs to help people in our community. They have Joy House, which is specifically aimed at helping woman and children. Their Safe Harbor program aids men in coping with addiction, mental health issues and job placement. A very important program at The Milwaukee Rescue Mission is the Cross Trainers Academy. At the academy they not only teach school subjects, but life lessons, morals and help kids build character. We have aided the Milwaukee Rescue Mission with monetary donations for many years, but we have also had our employees take advantage of the many volunteer opportunities available. There are so many ways to help organizations in your own community. We believe it is the responsibility of every business to help their community.
